Our Curriculum
Aspiration, Diversity and Inclusivity
Our curriculum reflects and celebrates the rich cultural and linguistic diversity of The Stonebridge School community.
Our school serves a highly diverse and multilingual community. In 2025–26, 98.8% of our pupils are from minority ethnic backgrounds and 68.4% speak English as an additional language, significantly above the national figures of 38.9% and 23.8% respectively.
We see this diversity as a strength. The different languages, cultures, experiences and perspectives within our community enrich school life and provide valuable opportunities for children to learn from and about one another.
We are ambitious for every child. Our school also serves a community experiencing significant social and economic disadvantage, with 59.3% of pupils eligible for the Pupil Premium Grant, compared with 24.9% nationally. We recognise that some pupils may have had fewer opportunities to access experiences beyond their immediate community. Our curriculum is therefore deliberately designed to broaden horizons, extend pupils’ experiences and ensure that children encounter places, people, ideas and possibilities beyond those they may already know.
Through visits, visitors, enrichment activities, books, the arts, sport and experiences within and beyond the local community, we deliberately provide opportunities that broaden pupils’ horizons and extend their experiences. We want children to discover new interests and talents, develop curiosity about the wider world and build high aspirations for their own futures. We believe that a child’s circumstances should never determine the opportunities or ambition of the education they receive.
We recognise that pupils have different starting points and work to identify and reduce barriers to learning whilst maintaining high expectations for all. For pupils learning English as an additional language, appropriate support helps them to develop confidence and proficiency in English whilst accessing the full curriculum alongside their peers.
We work closely with families and value the knowledge, languages, cultures and experiences they bring to our school community. Our curriculum both reflects the community our children know and opens doors to experiences and opportunities beyond it.
Communication
Communication is particularly important within our multilingual school community. We place a strong emphasis on developing pupils’ vocabulary, oracy, reading and writing across the curriculum.
Children are supported to listen, discuss, question, explain and articulate their thinking with increasing confidence. We recognise and value pupils’ home languages whilst ensuring that all children develop the English language knowledge and skills they need to participate fully in learning and succeed.
Evaluation
We continually review and develop our curriculum to ensure that it meets the needs of our pupils and reflects the community we serve. Subject leadership, professional development, assessment, pupil progress discussions and consideration of pupils’ experiences and outcomes help us identify strengths, barriers and priorities for further development.
