Subpages
At The Stonebridge School, our core curriculum provides strong foundations in English, Mathematics and Science. We aim to develop secure knowledge, understanding and skills that children can build upon throughout their education.
Learning is carefully sequenced so that children build on what they already know. Key knowledge, vocabulary and skills are introduced, revisited and developed over time, enabling children to become increasingly confident and independent learners.
Teachers use assessment to identify what children know and understand, address misconceptions and plan appropriate next steps.
Curriculum entitlement
Our core curriculum is ambitious and accessible for all children. Teachers know their pupils well and make appropriate adaptations to teaching so that all children, including those with SEND and those who may face barriers to learning, can access the curriculum, develop secure knowledge and make progress.
Assessment is used to identify what children know and understand, address misconceptions and inform future teaching. Appropriate support and challenge are provided while maintaining high expectations for every child.
Our aim
By the time children leave The Stonebridge School, we want them to have secure foundations in English, Mathematics and Science, and the knowledge, skills and confidence they need for the next stage of their education.

Phonics
Subject Lead: Abigail Foulkes-Murray
We use Read Write Inc. Phonics (RWI) as our systematic synthetic phonics programme.
Children are taught to recognise sounds and the letters that represent them, blend sounds to read words and segment words to support accurate spelling. They read books that are closely matched to their developing phonic knowledge, enabling them to practise their learning and develop accuracy, fluency and confidence.
Children’s progress is assessed regularly so that teaching is closely matched to their stage of development. Where children require additional support, targeted teaching is provided to help them develop secure phonic knowledge and become confident, independent readers.

Reading
Subject Lead: Preesha Lachani
Our Reading curriculum develops children’s fluency, vocabulary, comprehension and enjoyment of reading.
In Key Stage 1, VIPERS is used to support the explicit teaching of reading comprehension skills. Children develop their ability to explore vocabulary, infer meaning, predict, explain, retrieve information and sequence what they have read. An overview of the structure can be viewed HERE.
In Key Stage 2, Accelerated Reader is used to support independent reading. It enables children to engage with appropriately challenging books, read regularly and develop positive reading habits.

Children encounter a broad range of high-quality fiction, non-fiction and poetry. Through reading and discussion, they develop their understanding of texts, broaden their vocabulary and build the knowledge required to become confident and thoughtful readers.

Writing
Subject Lead: Humaira Masud
Our Writing curriculum develops children’s ability to communicate clearly, accurately and effectively for a range of purposes and audiences.
We use Literacy Tree to support the teaching of Writing. High-quality texts provide meaningful contexts for learning and expose children to a rich range of vocabulary, authors, genres and writing styles.
Our Writing overview can be viewed HERE.
Children develop their knowledge of composition, spelling, handwriting, vocabulary, grammar and punctuation. They are taught to plan, draft, evaluate and improve their writing and are given opportunities to apply their knowledge with increasing independence.
Spoken language and vocabulary development are embedded throughout the curriculum, enabling children to articulate their ideas and develop the language they need to communicate effectively.

Maths
Subject Lead: Gabriella Ortutai
Our Mathematics curriculum develops children’s fluency, reasoning and problem-solving skills and supports them to become confident and successful mathematicians.
We use Ark Curriculum Plus Mathematics Mastery across all year groups, alongside other carefully selected resources to support teaching and learning.

Learning is carefully sequenced so that new mathematical knowledge builds on secure prior understanding. Children develop conceptual understanding alongside mathematical fluency and learn to make connections between different areas of mathematics.
Children are given regular opportunities to reason mathematically, solve problems and explain and justify their thinking using appropriate mathematical language. Teachers use assessment to identify misconceptions and adapt teaching so that children receive appropriate support and challenge.
The Mathematics curriculum provides coverage of the National Curriculum programmes of study and supports children to develop fluency, mathematical reasoning and problem-solving skills.

Science
Subject Lead: Ilwad Mohamed
Our Science curriculum develops children’s curiosity about the world and their understanding of scientific ideas and processes.
We use the Cornerstones Curriculum to support the teaching of Science. It provides a clear framework for progression, aligned with the National Curriculum, alongside high-quality resources to support teaching and learning.
The curriculum is structured so that important knowledge, concepts, vocabulary and subject-specific skills are introduced and developed over time. Learning builds on what has come before and prepares children for increasingly challenging content as they move through the school.
Children build substantive scientific knowledge alongside the disciplinary knowledge needed to think and work scientifically. Projects are sequenced to support the development of knowledge and vocabulary, with opportunities for first-hand observation and investigation where appropriate.
Across the primary years, children develop their understanding of areas including living things, plants, animals including humans, materials, forces, light, sound, electricity, Earth and space, evolution and inheritance. The scheme provides complete coverage of the National Curriculum programmes of study.
At The Stonebridge School, the Cornerstones framework supports our curriculum, whilst our teachers bring learning to life. They use their professional knowledge of their pupils to make learning meaningful, accessible and responsive to the needs of their classes.
The Cornerstones Science projects can be found in the wider curriculum document.
